2008 Term dates (10 week terms) :

 Term 4 - 13/15 October to 15/17 December

 Workshops

 What?

Performance Preparation - A Weekend Workshop for students who have completed a minimum of one term of Level 1 classes and wish to further develop their skills in how to 'put it all together'. You'll learn how to lead, exchange the lead, stage positioning and how the chorus works. There are also sessions on hair, make-up and costuming. Bring along your treasures and learn how to incorporate them into your costuming. Finish the weekend off with a jam putting into practice what you've learnt while dressed in all the Tribal regalia!
Tribal Balancing Skills - A Workshop for those wishing to incorporate balancing props into their performance repetoire and is especially designed for Tribal Style Bellydance. This workshop will cover repetoire for both Baskets & Swords using Tribal Style movements and you'll learn what works and what doesn't.
Flag & Poi Twirling Skills - A Workshop for ANYONE who wants to incorporate Flag/Poi twirling into their performance repetoire or just for the fun of it! Flags are a safe and easy way of introducing yourself to poi twirling and the moves you learn for flag twirling can easily be adapted for poi's. We'll learn the moves and transitions and then create a simple routine that you can take away and use. Some flags may be available for sale at the workshop.

Class Curriculum

TRIBAL STYLE BELLYDANCE

LEVEL 1 CLASSES

The material is designed for people who have never danced before, people who have danced but not explored this style, and for perfection and review of technique for dancers already familiar with Tribal Bellydance. Class content of Level 1 includes at least one slow and one fast new movement per class, and a review of the moves covered the week before.
As the session progresses, we add all the moves covered up until that day in combinations during class, so students can learn how to transition and how the steps fit together.

You will learn:

  • to recognize the cues used for our group improvisational style.
  • a basic finger cymbal pattern to accompany the dance in Level One and will be required to have your own set from week two for classes.
  • isolation techniques, basic shimmies, turns, travelling steps and cues.
  • each class also includes warmups and cooldowns with stretching and strengthening sections.
  • the same material in Level 1 is repeated every term and it will take a minimum of two terms to become familiar with these movements.

By Invitation ONLY - A note for advancement - when Level 2 or performance level classes are offered you must be proficient in at least Level 1 (Level 2 for Sistas troupe) format movements first. Unless you have previously learnt in the BSBD format elsewhere or are known to the instructor to be confident at the Level 1 movements you will not be permitted to progress or join these classes.

LEVEL 2 CLASSES

Level 2 is the next step for dancers who are ready for a greater challenge, or for those aspiring to perform and excel. Here you'll begin partnering, working in small groups, learn leading and continue to perfect following skills, gain experience in chorus work and other manners of presentation, floorwork, use of props, more advanced finger cymbal patterns and improvisation, new movements, variations of existing moves, nuances of each move and repetition of all basic moves learned in Level 1. Material for this class requires more than one session to cover and can be considered ongoing. Simultaneous enrolment in Level 1 while moving up is strongly encouraged.

NEOTRIBAL FUSION

LEVEL 1 CLASSES : Technique & Basic Combo’s (Beginners to Advanced).

Introducing technique & basic combo’s for absolute beginners as well as providing more advanced dancers with essential technique revision and discipline. You will learn and spend time mastering individual moves while concentrating on developing the posture, muscle memory & attitude of Tribal Fusion. Piecing together several moves in short combinations to introduce you to learning choreography and/or enhance your choreographic knowledge.

LEVEL 2 CLASSES* : Drills & Choreo (Intermediate to Advanced).

Building on Level 1 knowledge you will be taking your dance to a whole new level by drilling moves repetitively to increase your muscle strength & stamina – this will make you sweat! We will also combine several moves to create more complex combination movements and include them in sassy choreographies that will also develop theatrical & artistic presentation.
*Must also enrol in Level 1 NeoTribal Fusion class.

OTHER CLASSES/WORKSHOPS...

PERFORMANCE PREPARATION WORKSHOP

This workshop is in two parts and will be offered periodically as per demand. It is designed for both those who are new to dance performance and for those who have not yet performed in this format and style of dance. It is an early introduction for those who are competent or very close to being competent in Level 1 Technique and are interested in performing.

Part 1 – The Dance
Here you'll use Level 1 movements and be introduced to and practice to basic leading and leadership exchange techniques, gain experience in basic chorus work and learn other presentation etiquette.

Part 2 – The Dancer
This part is for the dancer to learn the basics of costuming & make-up for performance.
A lot of fun but also serious skills are gained from spending a few hours learning about the origins of the costuming elements, discussing options for construction/purchase and dressing-up.

A Hair & Make-up session is part of this workshop to permit each participant to practice the application of Full Tribal Make-Up and to practice Hair/Headwear options.

Class Ettiquette:

  • Please be ready to commence class at the appointed time. If you are late it is your responsibility to ensure you are adequately warmed up and join the class without causing too much distraction. Likewise if you need to leave early please advise your instructor & leave without distraction to the rest of the class. Ensure you allow adequate time before leaving to self-stretch and cool down to prevent cramps and potential injury.
  • IMPORTANT - Please advise your instructor if you have an injury at the beginning of each class. This is for her information only, it is ultimately your responsibility to care for your body and operate within your own capabilities. If you are injured or otherwise physically limited and it affects your ability to perform certain movements please advise the instructor, we can perhaps offer an alternate method of performing the movement and therefore avoid further injury from forcing your body to do something it cannot or is as yet unable to do.
  • Please turn PDAs/Mobile phones off or onto silent for the class duration. If you require otherwise please advise your Instructor before class.
  • Questions are encouraged, we are not mind readers & it is the only way to check your understanding if you are unsure of something! :o)
  • Well behaved children are permitted to observe provided they are able to keep themselves amused. If they cause too many interruptions you and they may be asked to leave.
  • A note on progression. Any dancer will not be able to attend the higher level class until the student is deemed by the Director to be fully competent in the skills of the current level class.
