Tribalista Artistic Director - FIONA MACPHERSON | My dance experience runs to a total of 25+ years having grown up learning (from the age of 4), performing and teaching tap, jazz & classical dance into my late teens. After a two year break from the dance scene, I discovered bellydance and was intrigued by the skill, power, grace and rhythmic basis of the dance. It connected me to the earth, fellow dancers and the audience in a way that I felt was the ultimate creative expression of the wonder and beauty of being a woman…..and I have never looked back! |
| I moved to Canberra from Victoria in 1999 & have been teaching bellydance for 5 yrs. I have learnt, performed & taught various forms of bellydance primarily based in Egyptian & Turkish Cabaret fusion but I now specialise in American Tribal Style (ATS) & Neo-Fusion styles of bellydance. I commenced learning ATS in 2002 and have participated in a number of National & International workshops in this genre. I am certified by Kajira Djoumahna of BlackSheep BellyDance in Maui, Hawaii to teach Level 1 ATS in her format. I have an ongoing training mentorship with Kajira and am currently working on completing certification at Level 2 of her format. I teache and perform ATS under the name of Tribalista. I also teach Neo-Fusion bellydance and perform in this genre with my dance partner Rita under the auspices of GypsyNoir. This allows me to pursue my other interest in the fusion of bellydance with other dance styles including Funk, Hip-Hop, Jazz, Gypsy, Classical Indian/Bollywood styles & other styles of dance. I attended a week long Intensive in August 2005 in Maui with Rachel Brice (The Indigo & Bellydance Superstars) and recently attended a number of workshops in related styles and Tribal fusion bellydance at Tribal Fest 2006 (San Francisco, USA). Workshops I attended were taught by Tempest (Gothic Bellydance), Jill Parker (Ultra Gypsy), Jillee, Jen & Meliza (Fire Belly Dance Fusion) & Colleena (Odissi Dance). I continue my learning at every opportunity, attending workshops whenever my schedule permits. I look forward to meeting you and sharing with you my love of this incredibly beautiful dance that is as varied and individual as the women who perform it. Namaste /|\ |
